In the Belly of AI

(Les Sacrifiés de l'IA (In the Belly of AI))

AI tools are used daily by hundreds of millions of people. Many see them as a beacon of hope for a brighter future. But what is the true cost of this technological progress? The film uncovers the dark side of artificial intelligence.

This unsettling and ironic dive into the belly of the omnipresent technology exposes, through expert testimony, the “victims of AI”—the pillars on which today’s large language models are built. Every answered prompt comes at a hidden price: cheap labor from populations in the Global South, mental health consequences stemming from the analysis of violent content, and the excessive extraction of mineral resources. All of this aligns with the emerging ideology of longtermism, which emphasizes moral responsibility toward the distant future of humanity and is gaining increasing support among Silicon Valley elites.

White Gold: Elon Musk and the Race for Argentina's Lithium

Lithium is found in almost every electronic device, from mobile phones to computers. It’s, thus, no coincidence that it has earned the nickname “white gold.” But what is the true cost of its extraction, which takes place primarily in countries of the Global South?
